Nanokamachi-dori Concept: "A Nostalgic Townscape Where the Culture of Commerce Lives On"
What is the Nanokamachi-dori Townscape Committee?
The Nanokamachi-dori Townscape Committee was founded in March of 1994 with aims to rebuild the local community and restore the storefronts characteristic to this castle town, while beautifying and preserving the historical buildings that remain on Nanokamachi-dori. Since then, we have been engaging with repair and improvement of storefronts, as well as creating countermeasures against the vacating of stores.
Our Committee's Initiative: "Rebirth of the Townscape, Resurrection of the Hustle and Bustle"
At the time of the committee's founding, one in three storefronts on Nanokamachi-dori Street were vacant. However, we were able to resolve about 30 empty storefronts, reviving the charm of the townscape. Now, as a model district for tourism in Aizuwakamatsu, Nanokamachi welcomes about 300,000 tourists a year.
